Today we were at the Idaho Potato Museum in Blackfoot, Idaho. We did other stuff too, like visit Idaho Falls, Idaho (which coincidently has pretty water falls, no connection to the city's name however) and we drove down to Salt Lake City where we're spending the night. But most importantly we visited the Idaho Potato Museum. It was everything we thought it would be. From the old railway station it was in, to the vast collection of antique potato peelers, to the worlds largest Pringle, to the vintage poster of Marilyn Monroe wearing an Idaho potato sack (Back story: Marilyn was wearing a scarcely clad dress to an event, and someone commented, "that girl would look good even in a potato sack!" So her publicist got her to pose in an Idaho potato sack. She does look pretty damn good in it.). The museum is small, rundown, and there's no paper towels in the bathroom. It's run by a middle aged couple, and is a non for profit. It doesn't have many frills, but the place is history. From the discovery of the potato by the native people in South America around 200 BC, to its journey to Europe in the 1500's, and how Idaho became the biggest potato exporter in the early 1900's, it's fascinating. For a minute I wonder what humanity would have been like without potatoes, evolution would have taken a very different turn I think. Miriam and I are very excited by this, we apparently are huge potato nerds. I worry about us sometimes.
